OEO Documents

This page provides links to selected documents pertaining to the U.S. Office of Economic Opportunity (OEO), the flagship agency of President Lyndon Johnson's "War on Poverty" of the 1960s. While OEO existed for only a decade (1964-74), it did succeed in focusing national attention on "the paradox of poverty in the midst of  plenty" (Preamble to the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964). Many of OEO's groundbreaking antipoverty programs were transferred to other federal departments and agencies where they continue to assist low income people and their communities. The documents provided here were copied from originals in the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library in Austin, Texas.
